Oracle 11g Streams Implementer’s Guide

Oracle 11g Streams Implementer’s Guide

Product Description

Design, implement, and maintain a distributed environment with Oracle Streams

  • Implement Oracle Streams to manage and coordinate the resources, information, and functions of a distributed system
  • Get to grips with in-depth explanations of the components that make up Oracle Streams, and how they work together

  • Learn design considerations that help identify and avoid Oracle Streams obstacles – before you get caught in them
  • Covers implementation steps with explanations of ‘why’ as well as ‘how’

In Detail

From smaller businesses through to huge enterprises – users all over the world often require access to data 24 hours a day. Distributed database systems proliferate the world of data sharing providing an ability to access real-time data anywhere, anytime. Oracle Streams, a built-in feature of the Oracle database, is a data replication and integration feature critical to the success and wellbeing of enterprises in today’s fast moving economy. This book provides the reader with solid techniques to master Oracle Streams technology and successfully deploy distributed database systems.

This book quickly goes over the basics and gets you up and running with a simple Oracle 11g Streams environment. It will serve as an excellent companion to the Oracle Streams Administration Guide. It is intended for Oracle database architects and administrators, and provides in-depth discussion on must-know information for the design, implementation, and maintenance of an Oracle Streams environment.

The book does not attempt to regurgitate all the information in the Oracle Streams Administration Guides, but rather provides additional clarification and explanation of design, implementation, and troubleshooting concepts that are often elusive in Streams documentation. It also identifies helpful tools and Oracle resources to add to your knowledge base, as well as tried and tested tricks and tips to help you tame Oracle Streams.

The book starts by introducing and explaining the components of Oracle Streams and how they work together. It then moves on logically, helping you to determine your distributed environment requirements and design your Streams implementation to meet those requirements. Once these concepts are discussed, the book moves to configuration and basic implementation examples to help solidify those concepts. It then addresses advanced features such as tags, down-stream capture, and conflict resolution. You then move on to maintenance techniques such as documenting the environment, effectively planning and implementing changes to the environment, and monitoring and troubleshooting the environment. When you have studied the techniques and completed the hands-on examples, you will have an understanding of Oracle Streams’ core concepts and functionally that will allow you to successfully design, implement, and maintain an Oracle Streamed environment.

What you will learn from this book

  • Clear, concise explanations of Oracle Streams components and concepts
  • Up-front design considerations and techniques – know what you need BEFORE you start building
  • Configure both Source and Target databases to support Streams capture, propagation, and apply processes
  • Set up a Single-Source Configuration using the Enterprise manager DB Console to divert flow in one direction and apply its concepts to a multi-master, or N-Way Replication environment configuration
  • Solidify your Streams concepts through basic implementation examples that can then be applied to more complicated systems
  • Learn about popular advanced features of Oracle Streams including Subsetting, Tags, Rules, and Rule based transformations
  • Discover effective and efficient troubleshooting techniques and tools

Approach

This book has a tutorial approach that provides both theoretical explanations and practical step-by-step examples using familiar Oracle demo schemas. Step-by-step examples include use of both Enterprise Manager and the SQLPLUS command-line interface. The authors have combined their experiences of working with customers in Oracle Support, Oracle training and education, and Oracle consulting, to identify the most common areas of confusion and misinterpretation experienced by Oracle Streams users. This book highlights these areas and focuses on bringing clarity and understanding to the reader.

Who this book is written for

This book is for users who have implemented, or are about to implement, a distributed database environment using Oracle Streams replication. The reader is expected to have an intermediate understanding of Oracle database technology.

This book is mainly intended for use by:

  • Oracle Database Administrators responsible for the implementation and maintenance of an Oracle Streamed environment
  • System and Database Architects responsible for the design of distributed database environments using Oracle Streams

Readers with limited knowledge of basic Oracle database technology can benefit from Chapters 1 and 2, which cover Oracle Streams Components and Design Considerations.

Oracle Performance Tuning for 10gR2, Second Edition

Oracle Performance Tuning for 10gR2, Second Edition

Oracle Performance Tuning for 10gR2, Second Edition

Product Description
Tuning of SQL code is generally cheaper than changing the data model. Physical and configuration tuning involves a search for bottlenecks that often points to SQL code or data model issues. Building an appropriate data model and writing properly performing SQL code can give 100%+ performance improvement. Physical and configuration tuning often gives at most a 25% performance increase.

Gavin Powell shows that the central theme of Oracle10gR2 Performance Tuning is four-fold: denormalize data models to fit applications; tune SQL code according to both the data model and the application in relation to scalability; create a well-proportioned physical architecture at the time of initial Oracle installation; and most important, mix skill sets to obtain the best results.

* Fully updated for version 10gR2 and provides all necessary transition material from version 9i
* Includes all three aspects of Oracle database tuning: data model tuning, SQL & PL/SQL code tuning, physical plus configuration tuning
* Contains experienced guidance and real-world examples using large datasets Emphasizes development as opposed to operating system perspective

Sams Teach Yourself Oracle8 Database Development in 21 Days

David Lockman, "Sams Teach Yourself Oracle8 Database Development in 21 Days"
Publisher: Sams | 1997-08-15 | ISBN 0672310783 | PDF | 665 pages | 3.21 MB

Sams Teach Yourself Database Development with Oracle in 21 Days is a tutorial that will teach the reader the basics of developing Oracle database applications. This book focuses on teaching the concepts behind logical and physical database design, a working knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL, and the basics of Developer/2000, and Oracle Power Objects.

Summary: Not Perfect, but the Best for Beginners
Rating: 5

"Teach Yourself Oracle8 Database Development in 21 Days" is not a perfect book, but is probably the best general book for beginners. As noted by other reviewers, the book is best used with a working installation of the Oracle 8 database -- something not supplied with the book. The book will give you a good, general understanding of database design, SQL, PL/SQL, Oracle Reports, Forms, and Queries, Graphics, and some basic database administration. While not as in depth as more advanced, more narrowly focused books, this book answered questions (e.g. how to convert Forms and Reports from development to Runtime versions) that I didn't see answered anywhere else. Overall, a must have for the novice Oracle user and a good reference for intermediate users, as well.

Summary: Need advisory as to the need for software.
Rating: 4

First, let me say I have not read the book entirely. My observation, as a visual type learner, is I expected the CD to contain all I needed to conduct tutorials. This is not the case. You need some level of an Oracle database on your computer as well as the Developer 2000 software. I think it would be good business for the publisher or Amazon.com comments to advise what you need in order to benefit from the enclosed CD tutorial. Other than that, what I have observed from the book is it is well organized and will be very informative, even without the required software to run the book's CD tutorial.

Summary: For those new to Oracle, this is a great way to start.
Rating: 3

This book covers the basics of Oracle database and Developer/2000 tools. It is a great textbook since it covers the material in easy to understand format and uses numerous screens to guide the reader through the learning process. As a teacher, I had been searching for years for a book that would properly cover the material for an introductory Oracle course. This book is the best I have found so far, and it amazes me how similar it it to the handouts I had produced myself over the years. The book however does have a couple of flaws (and hence the three star rating). First, contrary to the title, it has very little on Oracle 8. Second, it does not cover SQL*Plus. The other shortcomings are minor if you accept this book as only an introductory book. Regardless, if you are teaching an introductory Oracle course and are looking for an easy to use textbook, this is the book for you (until someone does a better one).

Summary: A revision-INTEGRATION of the Oracle Tools and Database
Rating: 3

This book help you to know the differents parts of a database. First its cover the Analyst of a project. After that it explains how to create tables, triggers, etc in the database. After that it explains how to make Forms, Reports and Graphics with Developer 2000. Then it explains the Oracle Power objects. It's a great book to integrate all the aknowdlegde that you could have about Oracle. It also contains an exam after each date. This book helps me to undestand what I alwas do some things in the Database

Summary: Great For New Oracle Users
Rating: 4

First, I should state that I have NOT read this book cover-to-cover. I've used it more as a reference. But if you are new to Oracle and Databases of this size, this is a great "just get me started" book. Books on Oracle tend to assume you already have a PhD in `Oracleese', this book does not. It gives you a good overview of all the Oracle products. Do not expect a lot of detail. Examples show you the very basics of `here's how to get a report started" or "here's a very basic pie chart" Which is great since Oracle's Design tools are not intuitive and can be frustrating and intimidating to the new user even if your familiar with other report or graphing tools. This book is great for you if you just want to get your feet wet, with out a lot of frustration, and then play on your own. I do recommend it for the new oracle developer.

Oracle Database Programming Using Java and Web Services

Kuassi Mensah “Oracle Database Programming Using Java and Web Services"
Digital Press | 2006-07-14 | ISBN: 1555583296 | 1120 pages | PDF | 3,6 MB

The traditional division of labor between the database (which only stores and manages SQL and XML data for fast, easy data search and retrieval) and the application server (which runs application or business logic, and presentation logic) is obsolete. Although the books primary focus is on programming the Oracle Database, the concepts and techniques provided apply to most RDBMS that support Java including Oracle, DB2, Sybase, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. This is the first book to cover new Java, JDBC, SQLJ, JPublisher and Web Services features in Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (the coverage starts with Oracle 9i Release 2). This book is a must-read for database developers audience (DBAs, database applications developers, data architects), Java developers (JDBC, SQLJ, J2EE, and OR Mapping frameworks), and to the emerging Web Services assemblers.
* Describes pragmatic solutions, advanced database applications, as well as provision of a wealth of code samples
* Addresses programming models which run within the database as well as programming models which run in middle-tier or client-tier against the database.
* Discusses languages for stored procedures: when to use proprietary languages such as PL/SQL and when to use standard languages such as Java; also running non-Java scripting languages in the database
* Describes the Java runtime in the Oracle database 10g (i.e., OracleJVM), its architecture, memory management, security management, threading, Java execution, the Native Compiler (i.e., NCOMP), how to make Java known to SQL and PL/SQL, data types mapping, how to call-out to external Web components, EJB components, ERP frameworks, and external databases.
* Describes JDBC programming and the new Oracle JDBC 10g features, its advanced connection services (pooling, failover, load-balancing, and the fast database event notification mechanism) for clustered databases (RAC) in Grid environments.
* Describes SQLJ programming and the latest Oracle SQLJ 10g features , contrasting it with JDBC
* Describes the latest Database Web services features, Web services concepts and Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) for DBA, the database as Web services provider and the database as Web services consumer.
* Abridged coverage of JPublisher 10g, a versatile complement to JDBC, SQLJ and Database Web Services.
